The Plow That Broke the Plains
7:00 pm Tuesday, December 1 During the depths of America's Great Depression the U.S. government commissioned the production of four documentary films highlighting the problems faced by the struggling nation. Produced on a shoestring budget by Pare Lorentz, who had no experience whatsoever in filmmaking, the works were nevertheless immediate sensations and were screened in movie theaters throughout America. Two of these films, "The River" and "The Plow That Broke the Plains," are considered classics and are still studied by film students today. Chillicothe area farmer Jim Hicks will introduce The Plow That Broke the Plains, a powerful and dramatic depiction of the Dust Bowl tragedy. A former documentary filmmaker himself, Jim was fortunate to have met the film's director Pare Lorentz. Registration requested, but not required. Call the library at 309-274-2719. |
