So Long It’s Been Good to Know You: Songs of the Dust Bowl and Great Depression, 1929-1945
Sunday, November 8, 2:00pm The Dustbowl and Great Depression brought havoc to America and remain the worst economic and social disasters of the last century. The economic downturn left twenty-five percent of the workforce jobless, and severe drought drove millions of citizens off their farmland of the Great Plains, from North Dakota to Texas. In the face of this calamity, hundreds of songs could be heard that expressed and revealed both the emotions and the viewpoints of the downtrodden. In migrant camps, union halls, and saloons, one could hear folk, blues, and country songs, the combination of which embodied collective voice of the nation’s dispossessed. Join Bucky Halker for a program that combines performance and commentary and features Bucky’s renditions of songs from the era, including the work of Woody Guthrie, Florence Reece, Leadbelly, Peetie Wheatstraw, and more. Registration requested, but not required. Call the library at 309-274-2719. This event will be hosted by Community Needs Agency. |
